The SATELLITE 2020 Tech & Engineering forum kicks off with an in-depth look at how antenna and terminal technology are evolving in terms of both form and functionality. In terms of form, we'll look at how these systems are changing physically to meet the requirement of their users' environment. For functionality, we'll look at how systems are becoming more "satellite-agnostic," enabling users to switch between satellite operators (LEO, MEO or GEO) to best meet their needs for coverage, throughput and cost without having to change their hardware.

With increasing competition and technology development, manufacturing and launch markets are experiencing price declines, and price/kg and number of satellites ordered are becoming less relevant as market indicators. In this dynamic where customer preference and priorities vary greatly, what are the new market performance indicators? With the declining launch and manufacturing prices, is it a race to the bottom? This Finance Forum panel will answer these questions and discuss the evolution of this part of the space value chain.

Satcom financial metrics remain tumultuous, underscoring an industry in transition. Lease revenues continue to be downgraded, while service revenues post double-digit growth across multiple retail sectors. Consolidation, privatization and the possibility of insolvency are all on the table, but despite long CAPEX cycles, satellite industry investment has never been higher. These trends indicate an industry toiling to evolve and determine where best to invest in an increasingly transitional market. This panel of satellite finance experts will interpret financial metrics across the satellite industry and prognosticate on where the data is headed.

When assessing the trends of global connectiveness, commercial remote sensing from space, and advances in artificial intelligence (AI), the trends point toward a future where information and overhead imagery will become available to the general public in near-realtime. The opportunities seem immense, but what would the availability of ubiquitous, realtime intelligence mean to the military operator and warfighter? The U.S. approach to commercial remote sensing has been to regulate and limit the imagery that can be taken from space, but international capabilities will not be so easily curtailed. Has the time come for the military operator to find better ways to hide, rather than tell someone not to look?

Over the past year, the largest satellite operators announced high-profile partnerships with cloud service providers from AWS to MS Azure. Less visible has the continuing integration of cloud services into the solutions that teleport operators offer to their data and media customers. But it is an important trend because it is part of a wholesale rethinking by teleport operators of their place in the value chain as they evolve from standalone providers of services and transmission capacity to high-value nodes in global, multi-company networks. In this session, a panel of expert practitioners explore the opportunities that partnership with cloud service providers can offer, the technical and policy requirements for interconnection, and what cloud service providers want from their outside partners. Produced in partnership with the World Teleport Association (WTA).

It's all about resiliency and rapid reconstitution. The ability to manufacture multiple 150kg satellites daily, the use of cubesats for remote sensing persistence, the increase in launch cadence from large launch vehicles and the onset of the small launch market, and the standardization of form factors all have the ability to greatly impact military space acquisitions and space architectures. This panel will discuss the impact of these new technologies on military planning and the tradeoffs in buying services vs. satellites.

Money flowing into space businesses has literally 'sky-rocketed' over the past few years, and all kinds of new ideas and projects found backers for a wide variety of products and services. Yet, many are still very much in the emerging phase without returns in sight, and investors are starting to give the industry more scrutiny before pouring millions without a confident ROI. This rapid-fire discussion will look at which sectors and companies are worth investors' funding and why, as well as the places to avoid.

VSAT networks were once a standalone solution to a fundamental problem: how to connect dozens, hundreds or thousands of locations on a unified platform delivering dependable quality of service regardless of local conditions. Today, VSAT networks operate in a different and more complex world. RF interference continues to rise - generated in no small part by poorly installed and operated VSAT terminals. What was once a closed RF network is now an integrated RF-IP network integrating seamlessly with the enterprise network, which must be managed by IT staff with little or no satellite experience. The sheer number of VSAT terminals in the network, and the huge growth in traffic, make networks harder than ever to manage without robust analytics and automation. In this session, teleport, satellite and tech executives describe the challenges their networks face today, the techniques and tools they use to overcome them, and solutions that are in development to tackle the greater challenges of the future. Produced in partnership with the World Teleport Association (WTA).

While global regulatory agencies say that their new initiatives are making it easier and cheaper to license and operate small satellites, some agencies have also been criticized for endorsing regulatory regimes that hinder the market and stifle the smallsat entrepreneurial spirit. Who, if anyone, is writing the "fair and appropriate" smallsat regulatory rulebook? What regulatory foothold, if any, does the smallsat industry need in order to thrive? This session will address these questions, while focusing on responsible use of space and space debris risk mitigation.

More than most buzzwords, Big Data stands for something with direct impact on your business. It is information with three characteristics beginning with the letter "v" - high volume, high velocity generated by real-time data collection, and great variety ranging from the highly structured to the completely unstructured. Its value lies not in the data alone but in the ability of data analytics, typically employing machine learning, to turn the data into actionable knowledge. And finally, it has been enabled by that other key trend, the rise of cloud computing, which makes massive computing power available on a pay-as-you-go model instead of through a massive capital investment. As the B2B transmission business becomes increasingly complex, Big Data expertise is becoming key to the survival and success of service providers in every major market. In this session, teleport technologists describe how Big Data and analytics are optimizing their services, winning new business and retaining customers by solving their most pressing problems. As satellite service frontiers become ever-more critical to economy and society, their sustainability - against clearly defined and understood cyber and physical security threats - must be ensured. A sustainable space environment must be guaranteed through a combination of international treaty, government policy, and commercial/industrial strategy. Functioning independently, or in combination, these approaches must clearly set-out satellite cyber security offerings, recognizing weak links, and developing remedies against a range of threat actors and vectors. Space assets are also vulnerable to physical threat. International law mandates that space is an arena of peaceful commercial and scientific activity, not a battlefield, but as various nations have brought A-Sat capabilities to bear, and as the NATO alliance is expected to declare space a "warfighting domain", we need informed awareness of the implications of kinetic kill/proximity/bodyguard satellites, electronic warfare, space lasers, etc. Space sustainability is a global imperative. Cyber security is far from being specific to satellite and is a core concern for the entirety of the IP-enabled global ICT infrastructure. But, of course, satellite - arising partly out of capacity and performance advances in ground segment equipment - comprises more-and-more of the vertebra of the infrastructure backbone. Ground segment is a frequent target for multi-faceted variations of cyber-attack, often involving malicious firmware to intercept, manipulate, block, and even take full control of critical communications systems. Encryption protocols, sometimes too infrequently employed to prevent denial-of-service (DoS) incursions, must be incorporated into the common life cycle of product development and product use. But, even then, solutions providers and users must act to address other system weaknesses that make it possible for threat vectors to maneuver around encryption's defensive walls. Presented in partnership with the Global VSAT Forum (GVF).

Space Tourism has been the preserve of the super rich and famous. Unless you have millions in your bank account, it is unlikely you would look to spend even now the tens of thousands needed to potentially fly into space in the next few years. While the prices are dramatically coming down, space tourism as an industry still seems to be quite away from prime time. Here, we look at the concept of a space travel break and how the industry can make that happen.
