Is the building safe to be in? What are they doing to keep things clean?
Yes, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center is safe to be in. The DC Health Department and CDC have determined the building and the city to be low risk. The convention center has posted a statement to their website (http://eventsdc.com/NewsRoom/News/Events-DC-Monitoring-Novel-Coronavirus-Outbreak.aspx) and has implemented the following protocols:
Is there a chance SATELLITE could be cancelled?
At this time, SATELLITE will still take place Monday, March 9 – Thursday, March 12. SATELLITE is in constant communication with the DC Department of Health, the DC Mayor’s Office and Events DC. SATELLITE is concerned with the safety of all participants and will continue as long as they confirm with us that it is safe to hold the event.
All of my meetings have been cancelled, is anyone even coming?
While COVID-19 has caused some companies to impose travel restrictions, we are expecting the majority of our exhibitors and attendees to be joining us on site. We have been monitoring hotel reservations for cancellations and contacting attendees pre-show via telephone to reconfirm attendance. 12% of our exhibitors and roughly 10% of our attendees have communicated they won’t be able to be with us on site. Some companies are amending preplanned meetings but still attending SATELLITE.
How can I see who is still coming?
The floor plan on the web site and in the mobile app is up to date with current exhibitors, speakers and attendees. All SATELLITE participants can download the official SATELLITE 2020 Mobile App through the Google Play or iTunes store to search, chat with and set meetings with other attendees. All attendees will have the option to note whether they are onsite at SATELLITE and available for in-person meetings or networking remotely and available for a phone or teleconference meeting.
Have any sessions been cancelled?
The conference program is kept up to date on the web site and in the mobile app. Due to travel restrictions, we have made some speaker changes. Should we have any sessions where we feel the conversation will be too diminished to be beneficial to attendees, we will cancel that session. We are also working with some of our speakers to hold webinars after SATELLITE. Those webinars will be made available free of charge to all conference registrants. The content and timing schedule is still being determined, and will be shared post-SATELLITE.
Is Elon Musk still keynoting?
Yes, Elon Musk is still planning to attend SATELLITE! All attendees will be welcome to attend Elon’s keynote. For anyone unable to attend in person, we will livestream his keynote through this link: https://www.satshow.com/stream/
What about the Operator General Session on Tuesday?
Yes, the Global Operator panel will still happen on Tuesday. Some of the CEOs are unable to attend, but SES, Eutelsat, Hughes and Iridium will all have executives on the stage. For anyone unable to attend in person, we will livestream the session through this link: https://www.satshow.com/stream/
What exactly is being livestreamed?
Elon Musk’s keynote on Monday, March 9 at 4pm Et and the Tuesday Opening General Session at 8:30am ET will be livestreamed. People can sign up here: https://www.satshow.com/stream/
Will any other content be available to people not able to attend in-person?
We do have the conference proceedings, which are audio recordings of every session, that will be made available free of charge to all Executive All-Access and Track pass registrants. Instructions on how to access the proceedings will be sent approximately 2 weeks post-SATELLITE. Additionally, we are working with some of our speakers to hold webinars after SATELLITE that will be made available free of charge to all registrants. The content and timing schedule is still being determined, and will be shared post-SATELLITE.
Are any refunds being given for cancellations due to travel restrictions put in place by certain companies?
Per the cancellation policy, registrants who do not cancel in writing prior to January 20, 2020 will be liable for the full registration fee. No exceptions.
March 5, 2020
As move in for SATELLITE 2020 starts today, Thursday, March 5 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, we wanted to share our coordinated efforts with the facility, city, and hotel community to ensure proper cleanliness and disinfection.
In a statement made to SATELLITE 2020 attendees, Samuel Thomas, General Manager and Senior Vice President of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, said “We are doing our due diligence in terms of making sure the building is not only safe, but sanitized. Our approach is a very proactive approach. When guests enter our building, we want to make sure they know and understand that we take this very seriously and understand the concerns they have.”
We will have “no handshake” stickers available at registration for attendees who would like to limit contact with others, and signs for exhibitors who would like to designate their booth as a no contact zone.
SATELLITE 2020 will continue to follow the guidance of the CDC and the WHO. As we have previously outlined, we have consulted with the convention center, hotels and our vendors to implement the following precautions during the event to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

We’d like to reconfirm that we will hold SATELLITE on March 9-12 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
The satellite industry has always been a resilient community that has come together at the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition to make headlines, announce product launches and progress the business of the satellite and space industry. At the 2020 event, we still expect an active gathering of satellite professionals who want to connect with partners and business prospects and appreciate those who are supporting the community at SATELLITE. There is continued activity among those who will be in DC next week:
At this time, only a handful of industry companies out of 331 exhibitors and sponsors and fewer than 40 people out of more than 11,000 conference attendees, have made the decision not to participate at SATELLITE 2020 due to travel bans. While we regret the absence of their attendance, we respect their decision, and will miss them at our annual gathering.
SATELLITE 2020 will continue to follow the guidance of the CDC and the WHO. As we have previously outlined, we have consulted with the convention center, hotels and our vendors to implement the following precautions during the event to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

With our trade show and conference staging March 9 – March 12, we can confirm that SATELLITE 2020 will take place as planned. Our duty to the community is to foster an environment that encourages business discussions among many sectors and continue progression of innovation in the satellite and space industries.
The majority of SATELLITE’s exhibitors and attendees are based in the U.S. and there are currently no travel restrictions within the U.S., or to and from most international destinations. We don’t expect that to change prior to the show dates. International travelers should plan for added time at U.S. airports for additional screening, but domestic travelers can expect safe and convenient travel.
The travel restrictions have caused a select few of our international audience to cancel their plans to attend. This will not have a material impact on our trade show.
While we’re committed to stage SATELLITE as planned, we are also dedicated to the health and safety of all participants. We’re working closely with Destination DC, the convention and visitors’ bureau; the convention center and all member hotels to ensure increased disinfection efforts, hand sanitizer stations and safety precautions. As you likely know, D.C. is one of the world’s top convention destinations and home to many diverse, political groups, so the safety of their visitors is a high priority. We are all monitoring this situation closely and will be ready to respond accordingly should anything change.
We will be taking added measures at SATELLITE 2020 to stop any spread of illness, but we also recommend everyone follow the CDC’s recommendations in their daily life to also stop the spread of illness: cough into a tissue, not your hands; wash your hands frequently and do not touch your face with unwashed hands; monitor your body temperature to detect any possible symptoms early.
We’re happy to report that SATELLITE 2020’s pre-show stats are very strong with nearly 12,000 registrants to date (that’s 9% higher than 2019 at this time). Our exhibit floor will be packed with 325+ exhibitors and preliminary calls to attendees have shown that 95% still plan to attend SATELLITE. The show also has some new features that we’re excited about and think you will be, too.

Based on the global news coverage as well as inbound questions we have received from our exhibitors and attendees, we wanted to provide an update on all precautions that SATELLITE 2020 is doing in regards to the novel coronavirus, recently named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization.
SATELLITE 2020 will continue to take place March 9 – 12 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. We value our community, and the safety and health of our audience is a top priority. Out of an abundance of caution, we have worked with the Washington Convention Center and other vendors to put preventative measures in place to ensure the safety and health of our audience to help alleviate concerns as best we can.
Here is what we will do onsite to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
SATELLITE will continue to monitor the situation, and take appropriate measures based on developments, and advice of the CDC and WHO.
The CDC recommends that everyone follow everyday prevention practices:
In response to the epidemic in China, the United States has implemented a travel/entry restriction on any non-US citizens that have been physically present within the People’s Republic of China, excluding the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau, during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry into the United States. The entire proclamation is available here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/proclamation-suspension-entry-immigrants-nonimmigrants-persons-pose-risk-transmitting-2019-novel-coronavirus/
As of February 24, 2020, there have been no positive cases of COVID-19 in Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland or other neighboring states. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html
