In just two short weeks, we’ll welcome more than 15,000 professionals to Washington D.C. for our 39th annual SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition! I don’t know about you, but I meet more people during SATELLITE than I do at any other time of the year. Being in one place with thousands of like-minded professionals can be exciting, but it can also be daunting when trying to meet other people or find the right person to start talking business opportunities.
While we can’t pull your “perfect business match” out of thin air, we can create the environment and give you tools that make the networking much easier!
ALL NEW Mobile App – we’ve upgraded our mobile app experience to include “smart matchmaking.” This means you are shown other attendees with similar demographics to you, and based on the people you are interested in, the app will continue to show you others who are just like them. This lets you narrow down to the exact group of people and companies you are most interested in meeting at SATELLITE. Of course, there is the good old-fashioned search function if you’d rather peruse the SATELLITE audience that way.
The mobile app is launching this week and all registered attendees will receive an email with login instructions. The login information will be sent to the email address you used to register, so if you need to make any updates, log in to the Resource Center to update your information, or send us an email at [email protected].
Women’s Happy Hour – on Wednesday, March 11 at 5:00 pm, all SATELLITE registrants are welcome to join the Women’s Happy Hour in room 151, sponsored by Akash Systems, Hogan Lovells and Loft Orbital. Drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and discussion about the best ways to hire and retain an inclusive female workforce are on the menu. To show your interest, you can sign up here.
SATELLITE Meet-ups – We all enjoy a good networking reception during the event, but sometimes you want to just hang out in a casual environment. For those arriving at SATELLITE on Sunday, March 8, we have two meet-ups happening in the area around the convention center. You can sign up for the Young Professional or Whiskey Society meet-ups online!
There are plenty more networking opportunities at SATELLITE, including the welcome reception, OrBITEing the Globe, on Monday, March 6 at 5:00 pm, the 5K Fun Run sponsored by Space Alliance on Wednesday, March 11 (sign up here) and so much more! But, you can’t take advantage of the networking if you aren’t at SATELLITE 2020!
The Power of Government as an Anchor Customer
The past 10 years have been the decade of New Space and commercialization of the space sector. The amount of private capital plowed into space has ballooned from some $200 million from 2009 – 2011 to nearly $3 billion from 2016 – 2018, according to Space Angels. With the space sector growing at twice the rate of global GDP, nations have begun looking to… [Read More]
The first big SATELLITE show of a new decade is only a few weeks away. There is no doubt that the excitement is building. It could be a momentous decade for our industry as the number of satellites in orbit by 2030 could be a massive increase from what we see today. One of the highlights of SATELLITE will undoubtedly be the Opening General Session (OGS) where the CEOs of SES, Intelsat, Eutelsat, Telesat, Viasat and Hughes will take to the main stage to talk about the future of the industry and what their companies need to do to stay relevant as other operators aim to make good on hugely ambitious constellation projects which could change the face and complexion of our industry. It is both an exciting and nervous time for the industry. We are seeing levels of ambition we have never seen before. Constellations of thousands of satellites was a completely alien concept not that long ago, but now it could become a reality.
As I write this, the C-band situation in the United States has taken a twist with Chairman Pai revealing details of a new proposal to allocate C-band spectrum for ultra-fast 5G services, which aims to balance the needs of both the satellite and wireless communities. This is a huge issue for satellite operators, particularly SES and Intelsat, and while Chairman Pai’s proposal is maybe not the best solution for these operators, it could have been worse. The fact satellite operators could receive ultimately close to $10 billion in payments was perhaps a little higher than expected. This C-band discussion will be a key part of our discussions on the Opening General Session and it will be interesting to hear the operator’s talk about this proposal and what it ultimately means for the going forward. There are bound to be more developments on this issue in the weeks leading up to SATELLITE, but SATELLITE will be the first time you will hear the big CEOs of our industry talk about these developments and what it means to them and our industry.
One of the jokes I make every year (and probably why I won’t make a living as a comedian) is that every year the satellite industry is in a transitional phase and on the cusp of change. The joke is of course, does it ever get out of ever being in transition? But, as we start a new decade, I fear repeating myself again, but perhaps this time, the transformation, long talked about, is about to finally arrive. That is what makes this OGS more exciting than ever. How will these companies grow their businesses in the face of such strong competition? Also, when we fast forward to SATELLITE 2030, which companies will be on the equivalent OGS then? It is a really valid question. Certainly, there has been very little change in this session in terms of participants over the last 10-15 years. But, it is hard to imagine that there won’t be significant changes over the next 10 years.
We look forward to welcoming you to SATELLITE 2020 for the first and biggest satellite show of the year. We get a glimpse into satellite’s future. It should be fascinating. We hope to see you there.
Hello SATELLITE Community!
In just six short weeks, on Monday, March 9th, we will welcome 15,000+ guests from around the world as we kick off the 39th annual SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition in Washington, D.C.! What was once considered “the pre-show day,” Monday is now officially our opening day, and it’s been one of the busiest and most important days of SATELLITE week for some time, recently featuring keynote speakers such as Klaus Egeberg from Maersk Shipping, George Whitesides of Virgin Galactic, and the Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence.
This year, we are thrilled to add Elon Musk, Founder and Chief Engineer of SpaceX, to that list, as he and I will sit down for a one-hour fireside chat (sponsored by Maxar) at 4 p.m. EST on Monday, March 9. Musk obviously brings a high level of star-power to any interview, but what makes this particular fireside chat so unique is that we’re planning to go well beyond the topic of launching rockets. Musk and I will also discuss his vision for Starlink, the company’s massive and mysterious new constellation; the evolution of spacecraft design from Falcon to Starship; sustainable space business practices; the technology and time needed to explore the space frontier; and passing the baton to the next generation of space leaders.
The opening day keynote fireside chat with Elon Musk on Monday is only open to conference-level attendees. The exhibit hall opens on Tuesday. So, for those of you planning to come a day early to attend the keynote, please remember to register for the conference! We have a range of conference-level passes to suit all attendees. The discussion we have planned will be well worth your investment. Don’t miss out!
We look forward to seeing you in March!
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hill

Since the announcement of Elon Musk’s fireside chat keynote on Wednesday, we’ve gotten many requests from organizations asking for more time to coordinate their teams to attend SATELLITE. We understand that two days may not have been enough time to take advantage of our Early Bird pricing.
Bottom line is, more people want to come after this news and we want you there! Therefore Early Bird prices have been extended through next Wednesday, December 18th. This gives you a few extra days to get approval from your boss, check your schedule, and register for SATELLITE at the lowest price possible!
