Even in this age of technology, nothing compares with face-to-face interactions with people you would never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. You never know what new partnership could arise in a place you’d least expect, and if you aren’t there to seize it, your competitor will instead. At SATELLITE, you’ll make invaluable connections, meet new friends, catch up with old colleagues, and seal the deal that was too important for an email. We’re facilitating connections between all segments of the satellite industry and beyond.

Dive into the technology and applications driving the next wave of innovation in the satellite and space industries. Taking place March 9-12, 2020 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, the SATELLITE Conference & Exhibition will bring together 15,000+ attendees, 350+ exhibitors, and 200+ speakers for four days of building, connecting and uniting!
Many see the tagline of a show, product, TV series, and think it’s just a few words the marketing department strung together, trying to make a statement but sometimes falling short of encompassing what that event is really about. The idea for SATELLITE 2020’s theme “Build. Connect. Unite.” originated on a sidewalk, outside a Starbucks at the tail end of a busy week of meetings with our 2019 show supporters. Let’s be honest, don’t most successful ideas originate in a coffee shop or on a bar napkin?
Following the show, my team and I always book as many meetings as we can to get feedback on how we can improve the event, as well as hear what the industry forecasts for the next year (and beyond) and to gather ideas for SATELLITE so we can start planning our conference strategy.
As I reflected back on the meetings and all the perspectives we heard, there was a commonality that seemed glaringly obvious as we waited at a red light on a busy Washington D.C. block. We heard story after story of collaboration among companies that previously had not considered working together and did not fit the traditional “partnership” model in the satellite industry. One organization told us about a project where they had a recent breakthrough with a partner because they established collaborating on equal footing rather than a traditional prime/sub-prime relationship you see. Another was eager to share what they were able to achieve by working with a new satellite industry entrant who brought a totally different vision for a project. It may sound cliché, but we heard story after story of organizations uniting together for the sake of driving technology further, faster, and using this success to drive the greater good.
As the light turned green and we proceeded to our next meeting, my team and I talked about how exciting of a position the satellite industry is in with companies looking to shake up the way we operate. Everyone is uniting together for a common goal, connecting with new partners to infuse innovation and insight to their processes, and using fresh eyes to look at the challenges in the world that could be solved with satellite and space technology.
What does that mean for SATELLITE 2020 attendees? Well, we’ve gotten to work to implement a few new changes that’ll impact everyone and anyone that joins us March 9-12, 2020, for #SATweek:
If you’re interested in building your network… connecting with thousands of colleagues…uniting together and advancing the satellite, space, and connectivity industry… join us at SATELLITE 2020! Together, we can reinvigorate how we’re building the space economy, from the ground up.

Awards were presented Wednesday, May 8 during a special awards luncheon at the SATELLITE 2019 Conference and Exhibition in Washington, D.C.
ROCKVILLE, Md. – May 8, 2019 — Via Satellite, the premier publication providing news and expert business analysis on the global satellite communications marketplace, announced Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium, as the winner of the prestigious 2018 Satellite Executive of the Year Award, and Intellian’s v240MT Tri-band Antenna System as the winner of the inaugural 2018 Satellite Technology of the Year Award today.
The successful replacement of Iridium’s Block 1 satellites and the full launch of its NEXT constellation was an astounding feat of technical, financial, and operational management — with everything falling into place under the leadership of CEO Matthew Desch. When Desch joined Iridium as its CEO in 2006, the Virginia-based operator was in poor financial shape. So much so, that its competitors were expected to buy out the company in order to dissolve it and salvage assets. Desch’s laser-focus on product and market development created an alternative path forward whereby a new constellation could be financed based on the company’s revenue and profit growth.
“Matt Desch is no stranger to this award,” said Mark Holmes, Editorial Director of Via Satellite. “Desch won Via Satellite’s Executive of the Year Award in 2012 for his innovative approach to worldwide mobile connectivity, his leadership during a six-year financial turnaround, and his vision for Iridium NEXT,” added Holmes. As the 2018 Satellite Executive of the Year, Matt Desch again joins the ranks of the best of the best in our industry. Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX was honored in 2017; Stéphane Israël, CEO of Arianespace was honored in 2016; and the 2015 honoree was Michel de Rosen, CEO of Eutelsat.
Via Satellite has a longstanding history of recognizing the people leading the charge for the satellite industry, so the addition of the 2018 Satellite Technology of the Year Award is very fitting. Intellian’s tri-band v240MT antenna system wins the inaugural Satellite Technology of the Year Award.
Intellian’s multi-orbit and tri-band v240MT antenna system is the world’s first of its kind that enables communication services in three different frequency bands and tracks both Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites, as well as satellites in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO). It delivers data rates exceeding 1 Gbps using a single 2.4-meter reflector. Most importantly, the antenna’s versatility allows it to access to virtually any satellite constellation within seconds.
“Via Satellite is dedicated to recognizing the technology breakthrough that has changed the way the satellite and connectivity industry worked in 2018 and for years to come,” said Holmes. “We’re proud to bestow the 2018 Satellite Technology of the Year award to Intellian’s v240MT Tri-band Antenna System for their achievements in the satellite community.”
The July 2019 issue of Via Satellite will honor Matt Desch, CEO, Iridium as Satellite Executive of the Year, and Intellian’s v240MT Tri-band Antenna System as Satellite Technology of the Year in a special awards issue.
