Only ONE WEEK until SATELLITE!

In just one week, thousands of satellite, space and connectivity professionals will descend upon Washington D.C. for SATELLITE 2019 – the world’s largest satellite and space event that is in the business of meaningful connections.

It’s an exciting time to be in the satellite and space business, with the promise of 3D printing of rockets and satellites in space, satellite-powered applications and the emergence of “smart” everything, diminishing the digital divide through connectivity and the ever-growing diversity within our community.  This excitement bleeds into SATELLITE 2019, and if you’ve taken a look at our program, you know what I mean!

We’re extremely honored to welcome the U.S. Vice President Mike Pence for a special keynote address on Monday, May 6 at 1:15pm, following the luncheon keynote address that will be given by Klaus Bruun Egeberg, Head of Mobility & Connectivity, Future Solutions Fleet Management & Technology, Maersk.  The luncheon keynote address and special keynote address are open to All-Access pass holders only, so register today to secure your seat if you haven’t done so!

The first day of SATELLITE 2019 ends with the Lunar Ball Welcome Reception at 5:30pm, in the Ballroom Pre-function area on the third floor of the convention center.  As we hurdle towards human spaceflight and commercial space tourism, it seems fitting to raise a glass and celebrate 50 years since man first stepped foot on the moon.  All attendees are welcome, you just need to register for SATELLITE 2019!

Speaking of NASA, we recently confirmed that NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine will deliver welcome remarks at our Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 8.  And at the Awards Luncheon, we will announce the winners of Via Satellite’s Satellite Executive of the Year and Satellite Technology of the Year, as well as the winners of the Startup Space pitch competition.  In the spirit of unity and inclusion, for the first time ever, the community can vote which nominee they feel deserves to win the Satellite Executive of the Year and the Satellite Technology of the Year Awards.  To cast your ballot, simply visit www.ViaSatellite.com/vote before voting closes on Tuesday, May at noon ET.  The Startup Space pitch competition takes place on the Exhibit Show Floor in the Unveiled Theater on Tuesday, May 7.

You can view the complete program online at www.SATShow.com, and don’t forget to peruse the exhibitor list while you’re there and create your “must-see” list.  With more than 300 exhibiting companies on the show floor, you’re sure to get first-hand experience of the next-gen technology that is propelling us into the future.

Looking forward to seeing you next week!

3D Printed Rockets: Relativity Presentation at SATELLITE Will Be a Turning Point for the Space Industry

Rockville, MD. – Friday, April 12, 2019 – SpaceX and Blue Origin revolutionized access to space with affordable, reusable, launch vehicles. Planet and Spire then helped usher the industry into its golden age of small satellites, produced and launched within months. Now, Relativity CEO Tim Ellis is coming to SATELLITE 2019 to push space innovation to the next level – with an innovative 3D printing platform that can build and launch spacecraft within a matter of days.

On Monday, May 6 at 11am, Ellis will participate in a fireside chat at the SATELLITE 2019 conference (Walter E. Washington Convention Center) and provide attendees and members of the press with an exclusive first glance at the future of space production.

Hosted by SATELLITE 2019 Chair Jeffrey Hill, this presentation will detail Relativity’s latest progress in developing the first and only aerospace platform to integrate machine learning, software, and robotics with metal 3D printing technology to build and launch rockets in days instead of years, disrupting 60 years of aerospace technology.

Traditional aerospace manufacturing relies on fixed tooling, a complex supply chain, and extensive human labor, with rockets taking 18 months or more to build and launch. “Because of this, access to space has been limited to a handful of organizations that are able to spend millions of dollars to send spacecraft into orbit,” says Hill. “Fortunately, the recent rise of low-cost launch options combined with cheaper satellites has made space much more inclusive. However, this has also led to an incredible increase in demand that launch providers cannot possibly meet. 3-D printing is going to be a difference-maker, and Tim and his team at Relativity are leading the way toward our next big step in space. We’re very excited about this presentation.”

Tim Ellis co-founded Relativity in 2015 as the first autonomous factory and launch service for rockets, and the creator of the largest robotic metal 3D printer in the world.  He previously worked at Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, where he was responsible for bringing metal 3D printing into the launch company’s production cycle. He is the youngest member on the National Space Council UAG by nearly two decades, and directly advises the United States White House on all space policy. Ellis and Relativity have received financing from Playground Global, Social Capital, Y Combinator, Mark Cuban, the University of Southern California (his alma mater), and Stanford University.

Watch Relativity in action, with this VIDEO, “Everything Evolves” https://vimeo.com/184785258

Tim Ellis will be available for interviews on site following the presentation. Accredited members of the press receive complimentary, full-access to the SATELLITE 2019 conference and exhibit hall. To apply for press credentials, visit www.SATShow.com/press-registration

SATELLITE 2019 will be held May 6-9, 2019 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center located at 801 Mt Vernon Pl NW, Washington, D.C. 20001.

SATELLITE Starts With a Bang!

We’ve now entered the final month in our mad dash to opening day at SATELLITE 2019. I hope everyone has booked their travel and is all set for an exciting week! I’d like to talk to you about what’s in store for you right away as you arrive at SATELLITE. We have created what is, in my opinion, the most exciting opening day program I’ve ever seen in my role as event chair.

We’ve already spoken about the incredible opening general session with seven (!) executives from a diverse group of top space and telecommunications companies (Lockheed Martin, Amazon Web Services, IBM, Hughes, Boeing, Isotropic Systems, and Orange Business Services) talking about the next big innovation in space. In the weeks since that initial announcement, we’ve added three new headline events to the already jam-packed day 1 line-up.

On the morning of Day 1 at SATELLITE, (Monday, May 6th at 11 a.m.) I’ll be sitting down for a fireside chat about 3-D printing with the brilliant Tim Ellis, CEO and Co-Founder of Relativity, whose company aims to print fully equipped, payload-ready launch vehicles in a matter of days. Tim and I will talk about how Relativity is integrating machine learning, software, and robotics with its metal 3D printing technology to further increase the speed at which our industry operates. In encourage everyone at SATELLITE 2019 to attend, as these are the rare moments that shape space industry conversations throughout the week. Remember Boeing’s electric propulsion reveal, or the Orbital ATK/Northrop Grumman MEV reservicing pods presentation, or the Blue Origin first customer announcement with Eutelsat? These are the can’t-miss moments that make SATELLITE a special event.

Immediately following my fireside chat with Tim, I’ll be running upstairs to the Ballrooms to welcome our luncheon keynote speaker, Klaus Bruun Egeberg, Head of Mobility & Connectivity at A.P. Møller Maersk, one of the top three largest maritime shipping fleets in the world. Until this point, Maersk has been rather secretive about their ship connectivity needs. Mr. Egeberg wants to make SATELLITE 2019 a first, real “reach-out” event for Maersk. During his talk, he will outline Maersk’s vision for automated smart shipping fleets, and detail the connectivity requirements to realize those visions. If you service maritime or mobility customers, you need to see Klaus’ presentation. Register for the SATELLITE 2019 conference to gain access to this rare, and valuable keynote presentation.

Later that afternoon at 5:00 p.m., Washington Post Space Reporter Christian Davenport (among the industry’s best journalists and author of the fantastic book, “The Space Barons: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos”), will be hosting his own fireside chat with OneWeb CEO Adrián Steckel and SoftBank Managing Director Alex Clavel.  Following the operator’s successful launch of its LEO system, Mr. Steckel plans to share OneWeb’s plans for world connectivity, providing new, additional details to the business model first established by Greg Wyler at SATELLITE four years ago.

On top of all of this, day one at SATELLITE features some of our most popular conference program events – the Finance Forum hosted by NSR, the SGx Keynote series hosted by SGAC and the Future Space Leaders Foundation, Space Sustainability and 5G Standards sessions produced by ESOA, a SATELLITE 101 educational program for new expo hall attendees, and our first Startup Space Pitch Workshop – open to all startup companies and new entrants looking to connect directly with investors for feedback on their pitches. Whew!

One final note: If you’re a young professional attending SATELLITE and want to meet other young professionals in the industry over drinks, classic arcade games, and Skee-ball, sign up for the SATELLITE 2019 young professionals meet-up event at Washington D.C.’s Rocket Bar-cade the night before opening day (Sunday, May 5th at 8pm). The meet up is free and hosted by Via Satellite’s youngest professional, Managing Editor Annamarie Nyirady. Rocket Bar is a blast! Have some fun before the big day ahead!

Register for SATELLITE, make your last-minute plans, and I’ll see you all very soon!
