Dear SATELLITE community,
We are now less than three months away from the big show! It feels strange to say that we have so much time, considering that we already have nearly 200 speakers confirmed for the four-day long SATELLITE conference and exhibition. I say this every year, but it remains true each time – this year’s conference program is the best we’ve ever assembled. Diversity is core strength of the SATELLITE 2019 program. We not only have the widest range of end-user and industry representation on the program, we also have more young people and women speaking at SATELLITE than ever in its 38-year history. In fact, for the first time at SATELLITE, women outnumber the men on our general sessions (11 out of 21 speakers confirmed).
We are also proud of the diversity of our attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors. Every year, it seems that more and more people are investing time and money in satellite technology. Small businesses, local governments, healthcare organizations, educators, and thousands of first-time attendees see their future in space. Excited about new constellations, connectivity systems, 5G, and imagery/sensing services coming down the pipe, these attendees want to be a part of the space-based economy, close the digital divide, and be leaders of a fourth industrial revolution.
Diversity is also emphasized in the topics we’ve chosen for our conference program. Our three general sessions on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday bring diverse groups of speakers together to assess the future of the satellite industry. Monday opens with “What’s the (Next) Big Idea?” with seven all-star innovators debating what will be the satellite industry’s most disruptive technological development during the next five years. Our Tuesday general session with the world’s largest satellite operators focuses on future projections for a diverse range of mobile connectivity services, with a diverse cast of guest moderators from Southwest Airlines and Sigfox. Wednesday’s general session focuses on diversity of talent in the workforce and how the satellite industry can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for young professionals.
I’m very excited to share this program with you and to greet all of you in Washington D.C. this May!

On Wednesday, May 8, all SATELLITE attendees will be treated to an incredible panel of women who are continuing to blaze their own path in the aerospace industry, brought together to discuss how despite years of awareness, important voices and perspectives are still missing from our workforce. A diverse workforce breeds innovation and creative problem solving. We all want that, so how do we get it?
From the value of mentorship to the importance of employee resource groups and diverse social groups, this round table discussion will be wide-ranging, with a goal of identifying solutions for the audience to take back to their organizations and move the needle on diversity and inclusion. The audience will hear examples of diverse teams, technologies and architectures becoming success stories for their companies.
