Why End-Users and 5G-Focused Telcos Want to Speak at SATELLITE 2019

Hello SATELLITE 2019 community! Believe it or not, we are now just a little more than three months away from the big show in Washington D.C.! We’ve been very busy during the past month working on SATELLITE, selecting our 2019 Startup Space contestants, and confirming speakers. Recently, I’ve received several emails from attendees asking about the wide range of speakers on this year’s conference program. “Why do companies like Southwest Airlines, Mastercard, Silversea, IBM, Orange Business Services, Amazon, and Deloitte want to speak at a space show?”

The answer to this question may vary slightly depending on the market, but the one common thread that ties these traditional enterprise “end-users” together is their interest in the increasing value of space-based data and global connectivity. The executives at these companies are not space experts, but they are constantly hearing and reading about space-based applications will launch businesses into the future. Whether it’s EO/sensing big data, secure space-based cloud services, blockchain, or simple connectivity to bridge the digital divide, consultants are selling space as fertile new ground for growth. We’re excited to have such a diverse group of enterprise market end-users already lined up for SATELLITE 2019. They are coming to talk about how satellites can fulfill their needs and to learn about new services and resources that will become available during the next year.

Another question I often receive from attendees is why we have a lot more 5G-themed programming and speakers from 5G organizations that traditionally represent cellular/terrestrial interests on this year’s schedule? These companies and organizations recognize that building global 5G infrastructure is going to require broad collaboration between government, private industry, consumers, and even traditional market competitors. In the United States, the scale of 5G service rollout is so massive that no one entity or company could possibly build everything themselves and maintain a seamless, global service. If multiple services are needed, then each of those types of services will need to work together under a uniform standard. That’s why we’re excited to have the two chairs of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) sit alongside satellite industry speakers for our 5G conference sessions. The telecommunications industry is becoming much more interconnected, and we’ve noticed a steady increase of interest from telcos to participate on our program.

We hope that you find the professional diversity of our speaker roster as exciting and refreshing as we do. We strive to make SATELLITE the most inclusive event in the telecommunications industry, welcoming speakers from all types of space-faring businesses all over the world. We also want SATELLITE to continue to be the most valuable networking opportunity of the year for our guests – a week of engagement that we hope yields new ideas, connections, and business for everyone.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Hill
Chairman, SATELLITE 2019

New Year, New SATELLITE!

From the SATELLITE and Via Satellite team, I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year!  Did you know that roughly only 8% of people actually keep their new year’s resolutions?  All too often, people set an “all-or-nothing” goal, and then fail to reach that goal, or even continue trying, after only a few weeks.  While January 1 is a great milestone to check-in with yourself and set goals to “re-invent” who you are or where you want to be, a much more successful approach is to make small adjustments that over time, add up to a big change.

If you’re looking to make a change or shift in your business or in your professional life, SATELLITE is the best venue for you to take stock of where you stand, and start making the improvements and changes you want to see.  Whether you are looking for new markets for your company to venture into, building your client database, or strengthening relationships with your existing customers, you can create the environment and set the tone for the first impression with a booth at SATELLITE.

Thinking about attending SATELLITE?  Whether you are a first time attendee or seasoned alumni, you’ll find something new and exciting at SATELLITE!  Maybe your organization hasn’t really used satellite connectivity before or your job now encompasses integrating satellite connectivity into your product or service.  Attend the Satellite 101 sessions in the SATELLITE Unveiled Theater on the show floor to get a crash course intro to satellite and space technology, and help you better navigate the show for the remainder of the week.  You’ll get the inside scoop from satellite companies on what technology and services you need to know about and help you build your “must-see” list of exhibitors.

If you come to SATELLITE every year, then you already know that the ever-changing landscape of satellite technology makes for an ever-changing experience at SATELLITE.  But, we do have a few new changes to SATELLITE 2019:

Startup Pavilion – This is your first look at innovation and disruption in satellite and space technology!  These companies are forging their own path in the community.

What’s the (Next) Big Idea? – On Monday, May 6, we’re kicking off SATELLITE with a thought-provoking general session that is open to all attendees.  The discussion focuses on a range of technologies that may change the space industry status quo, including: cloud computing; new analytics and data fusion; 3D printing; lasers; robotics; block chain; machine learning; IoT; and new propulsion systems.

Satellite Technology of the Year Award – Each year, Via Satellite bestows the prestigious Satellite Executive of the Year Award on the person who has had the greatest impact on the industry from a financial, innovative and disruptive perspective.  New in 2019, we’re expanding the awards program to include the Satellite Technology of the Year Award, recognizing the technology breakthrough that has reshaped the way the satellite and connectivity industry works now and for years to come.  You can submit a nomination for both the Satellite Executive of the Year Award and the Satellite Technology of the Year Award online, but only through February 22!

SATELLITE 2019 has quite a bit to offer, I recommend you perusing the conference program, our list of top-notch speakers and filtering through the exhibitor list to plan your time for the week.  I look forward to seeing you in Washington D.C. May 6 – 9 at SATELLITE 2019!

Will We Close the Digital Divide?

One of the big talking points that will permeate throughout the event will be bringing people connectivity who previously have not had access to such services. Companies like OneWeb talk a lot about connecting the ‘Other 4 billion’ people and as more and more capacity comes online. Africa remains a key target for many operators and satellite companies look to bridge digital divides and kickstart economies throughout the region. It remains an almost utopian goal of the satellite industry to bring the whole world online, and creating a connected global community across regions and oceans.

With so many new constellations coming online over the next few years, it will be interesting to see if we see any major progress in bringing people online in regions such as Africa. While the cost of satellite capacity is coming down, the cost of customer equipment is still an issue. There are still many hurdles to overcome. However, at SATELLITE, we will get updates on these major constellations, as well as progress in making connectivity available to many more people than it is today. It will be one of the key themes of the show. One could argue we have been talking about reducing these divides for well over a decade now. However, the time is now fast approaching where we will see if these ambitious plans will start to make this long-promised difference.

I hope to see you May 6-9, 2019 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C for the 2019 SATELLITE Conference & Exhibition. Make sure you register before December 13 at midnight to secure the lowest rates on conference passes or a free exhibit hall pass.

We’re SATELLITE 2019, and we’re in the business of meaningful connections!

Then again, aren’t we all in the business of meaningful connections? Connections are a vital part of our lives, both personally and professionally.

Satellites keep the world connected, whether it is a phone call with a loved one in another continent, providing communities in remote regions with internet access, or broadcasting monumental events to millions of viewers around the world.  Satellites are becoming an integral part of other forms of connectivity as well, including connected transportation, internet of things and the impending 5G revolution.

Just as satellites are the cornerstone of facilitating connections, the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition is the cornerstone of facilitating professional connections that produce meaningful relationships and business partnerships that progress the industry.  We’re fostering conversations between those who can provide the services and infrastructure for communications and the organizations whose future relies on the seamless connectivity.

If you’ve been to SATELLITE before, and even if you haven’t, get ready for all-new experiences.

  • On Monday, all attendees will have access to “Satellite 101”, a series of educational sessions designed to give our new communities a crash course in the satellite basics, and help them better navigate the exhibitors on the show floor and the content in the conference program. Whether this is your first time at the event, exploring satellite connectivity as a solution for your company, or just need a refresher on what is new with satellites, this is the perfect place for you to start your SATELLITE experience.
  • The conference program is taking a renewed focus on connectivity and the drivers of innovation in the satellite industry. New markets, new applications and new technology – you’ll be immersed in the forward progression of all things satellite and space-based.
  • On the show floor, you can experience the first-ever Startup Pavilion, showcasing companies that are making waves in next-generation technology, as well as more than 60 first-time exhibiting companies and thousands of innovative products and services.

If you haven’t yet, take the time to register today and be prepared to make your meaningful connections at SATELLITE.  Exhibit Hall passes are free and the Loyalty Rate is in effect for the Conference, but only through December 13.  I look forward to seeing you there!
